Ten Things I Don't Put On My Cv Liz Ellis

Liz Ellis may be captain of the Australian netball team and the Sydney Swifts, a motivational speaker and broadcaster, but she's no dab hand with the vacuum.

There has been plenty of uncertainty on my career path. I made the move from a good job at a top-tier law firm to a full-time netball player, with a business running netball coaching clinics in school holidays. But I had the certainty of following my heart by choosing to do what I loved.

I should probably never admit that I left the law because I wasn't particularly good at it.

I wanted to be an astronaut when I was a little girl.

Coaches who fail to challenge you are ones that leave me a bit cold . . . I like a coach who thinks outside the square.

I'm always challenging those around me to try to do things better . . . I'm also pretty up-front, which some people find confronting.

My current coach, Julie Fitzgerald from the Swifts, has hammered into me over the years to always respect your opposition. Out of that respect grows a desire to be as prepared as possible.

The most challenging moment in my netball career was the moment I ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament during a Test match against New Zealand. I was 32 and in a bit of a form slump. It was a make-or-break moment for me - do I walk away from netball . . . or get it fixed and try to come back to the top level when many people thought I couldn't? I chose the latter.

I love cooking but I hate cleaning. I tend to delegate that task to my husband.

We are away so much that when I am home I just want to be a hermit. I really need to give myself a shake and spend time with loved ones!

My joints only have so much left to give, so I am looking forward to a future career that doesn't involve running, jumping and fitness testing. -- LISA MITCHELL
