AFTER 2 1/2 years of controversy and debate, two hard-surfaced netball courts will be added at Newcastle's National Park.
Newcastle City Council was again divided over the plan last night, but voted to approve the additional courts along with a plan to improve floodlighting on a neighbouring soccer field. The plan, earmarked for a section of National Park on the corner of Parkway Avenue and Union Street, was first submitted in May 2005, but a decision was deferred four months later pending the formulation of an overall plan of management for the park. The plan of management is still not complete but the council's Sports Advisory Panel moved recently to encourage the council to make a decision.Cr Keith Parsons said last night's approval was like putting the cart before the horse."We need to have the plan of management for the entire park completed," Cr Parsons said.
