FIGTREE defender Marji Parr and her Fiji team-mates' hopes of reaching the semi-finals at the World Netball Championships were shattered by the Cook Islands in Auckland.
After opening their campaign with an easy win over Singapore last weekend, the Fijians suffered a demoralising 78-35 loss to world netball heavyweights Jamaica on Monday night. The Fijians had to bounce back with a win over the Cook Islanders to reach the quarter-finals, but the underdogs snuck home 42-36 yesterday.South Pacific Games champions Fiji, who finished eighth at the last world titles held four years ago in Jamaica, actually led 13-11 at the first break.Cook Islands hit the front 22-21 at half-time and only took a 32-30 lead heading into the final term but managed to skip clear.Captain and centre Ritua Petero provided the spark for her team's passing game, helping the underdogs book a showdown with Australia in tomorrow's quarter-finals.
